The Tradition of Manitou Springs |
| |
The first bottling works was established in 1872 by the
Colorado Springs Company at one end of the bath house on
the banks of Fountain Creek. Later, a bottling shed was
built next to the original building. This plant bottled
sparkling table water from the Navajo Springs. A glass factory
was built in Colorado City to produce the increasing number
of bottles needed to contain this product called "Manitou."
An advertisement that speared in 1886 in the Directory of
Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, and Colorado City claimed
this table water to be "purest, most refreshing, and
best tasting natural spring water." It went on to say
that "like all waters strongly impregnated with carbonic
acid gas, it aids digestion and is highly beneficial in
dyspeptic and bilious conditions." The price per case
of fifty quart bottles that year was $7.50. Ten dollars
would buy a case of one hundred pint bottles. At the time,
the industry was owned by the Manitou Mineral Water Bath
and Park Company.
An advertising booklet put out by the Manitou Springs Mineral
Water Company spoke highly of the medicinal benefits of
this clear, sparkling liquid as an aid to digestion and
a general toning of the stomach, liver, and kidneys. It
recommended that the water be mixed in equal proportions
with milk and given to infants, to produce healthier, happier
babies. It mentioned further that the table water was "soothing,
allaying, and gently curative," and the beauty of it
was that "it could do no harm." |
